Lego is cool

I've been looking for a decent, affordable, Blade Runner Spinner model for years! either they're vewwwwy expensive, or impossible to find - or both. And that's on a GOOD day!

But this custom-made lego version (found here)got me drooling. Great likeness, very detailed, great colors... As close to perfect as you are going to get using legos!

Check this page for an entire gallery of stuff made by this person called Kaitimar.

Deckard is a replicant! Neener neener

One of the persistent controversies surrounding Blade Runner has always been the matter of Ridley Scott's hints that Deckard himself is the very thing he is hunting -a replicant. It is a religious discussiuon; people are very passionate about how they feel about it. Some will deny to the bitter, bloody, gory end that this is nonsense, even if the director himself has been telling us over and over that he is.

Don LaFontaine

In a world where movies need trailers to inform the public, one man can make a difference...

You know him as the Movie Trailer Guy, the Voice of God, The King of Voice-overs! This is a short documentary/interview with the man himself. Check it out.

The nature of Monkey was IRREPRESSIBLE!

This is one series I fondly remember seeing on the BBC in the early 80's. Based on an old Chinese story, and no doubt very familiar for all the Dragon Ball fans out there...

On farmland no one can hear you scream!

I've heard about alien technology, but this is ridiculous!

Ridley Scott introduction at the Jules Verne film festival

The recent Final Cut version of Blade Runner was shown at several film festivals all over the world, including the Jules Verne Adventures Film Festival. Unfortunately director Ridley Scott couldn't be present, but he recorded a little introduction speech for the audience. So check it out, and oh, make sure you watch it until the very end...

Blade Runner - The Revenge of The Final Reloaded Cut

Those who know me know that I'm a big Blade Runner fan.

This year, after what feels like a million years of waiting, the "Blade Runner: Final Cut" has been released.

Among other things, a bunch of technical shortcomings of both the 1982 "original" release and the 1992 Director's Cut version have been corrected while the movie's audio and video were enhanced & improved upon.
The result is well worth checking out, even if you have already seen the movie a 145 times (as I have).

The website Digital Bits has put online an extensive article on the Final Cut DVD set(s).

Best steampunk rocket design EVER!

Not many people know this, but the space race was started by the French in the late 19th century!

At one point in his career, writer/inventor/pro kickboxer Jules Verne commissioned Alexandre Gustave Eiffel and his army of mutant spiders to build him a rocket that, if finished, would have put the French on the moon. Which would have made them impossible to live with. Wait - they're already impossible to live with! Well, never mind.

But anyway, the project was ultimately abandoned due to financial reasons, and the Eiffel tower ended up as the landing beacon for aliens, as we now know it to be.

No, really!

Not for the squeamish - Singapore officials rap

Soooo... who thought this would be a good idea?

Still, there's some morbid pleasure to be had watching it - a bit like watching a train wreck.

This reminds me of a funny thing that happened to me! (Aren't you glad?)

I once got invited by my local branch of the Flemish Public Employment Service to what eventually turned out to be a recruitment movie for the Belgian army.

Apart from footage showing off the raw mechanized death power that is the Belgian army, it featured some obnoxious kid rapping away, that all but caused spontaneous spastic seazures with half of the unsuspecting people who turned up.

Strangely, I didn't sign up.

Some thoughts on Highlander

I've always loved Highlander. I loved the first movie foremost, but I also quite enjoyed the TV series. Unfortunately, the movie sequels have been of varying quality, putting it mildly, even though I still manage to enjoy some of them.

The latest one in the series of HL films, Highlander: The Source, is sadly the worst of the lot, IMNSHO. It throws much of the established mythology out of the window, the fights aren't very exciting, and the villain is more weird than menacing. There is little wit or humour to be found either.

It's a shame because I like the series a lot. I like the cast of the TV series (although I wish they hadn't killed off Connor in the previous movie) but it's just not a very good film.

To be honest I got me the DVD anyway because:

  • It was sold cheap (unsurprisingly)
  • I wanted to keep my collection complete. (Of the movies anyway.)
  • Because that's the sort of insane person that I am! Blame me.

Anyway, just to have something non-depressing to include in this post, here's the final moments from the final episode of the IMO rather excellent TV series.

Just Thinking About (The) Internet

One more thought about the Internet. THE Internet. Why are people calling it "the Internet"? Doesn't that suggest there are other Internets? Maybe that's what got Dubya confused when he mentioned the Internets!

Why not just refer to it as Internet? That's what they do in Holland and Belgium, BTW. Don't ask me how I know! I could tell you, but then I'd have to blame ya!

Internet Shocker!

Research by British scientists has revealed that the Internet is indeed a truck after all!

According to Intelligence reports the Internet can often be encountered when cruising the highways of Transsylvania!

Here's a photo of the Internet sitting between unsuspecting regular trucks.

Dominion Tank Police

In the early nineties, inspired by the success of Katsuhiro Otomo's mindblowing Akira, a wave of anime releases started being released in the West. One of the companies involved was Manga Video, nowadays known as Manga Entertainment.

In around 1993 they realeased a line of anime titles including Akira, Fist of The North Star, Project A-Ko and a hilarious OVA ("Original Video Animation") called Dominion Tank Police, based on a manga by Masamune Shirow, of Ghost In The Shell fame.

Dominion Tank Police was a funny series about a police force that used tanks as patrol vehicles, usually causing more damage than any bad guys could ever hope to. What's more, the English adaptation had a great cast of voice actors that made the series even more fun.

In the clip you see the adrenaline-pumping intro Manga Video animation, followed by the English intro for Dominion.

Even more Goldorak stuff

For the 2 people reading this blog - possibly counting me & myself - it should be clear by now that I'm into anime. A LOT!

Here's the French intro of UFO Robot Grendizer AKA Goldorak.

Highlander The Anime

Did you know there's an anime Highlander movie out?

It's called "Highlander: The Search For Vengeance" and was made by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, whose team has been involved in tons of stuff including Cyber City Oedo 808, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, and the Animatrix segment called Program.

If you like anime and Highlander this just might be worth checking out.

For more information check this Wikipedia entry. There's also an official site with a trailer. Check Sci Fi Weekly for a review.

Let's dance safely!

Here's an (in my view, anyway) oddity from the 80's. I don't know very much about the group "Men Without Hats", or the meaning behind this song, or the clip, but I've always found it intriguing.

I'm not sure what though. I always found the singer interesting; he looks permanently pissed off about things, which is a trait I can surely admire, since I am myself permanently pissed off about certain things! But I digress...

There's an interesting anachronistic contrast in the very 80's synth music versus the medieval surroundings we see in the clip. Remember that movie "A Knight's Tale"? This clip, and the song, would have fitted in perfectly!

Humongous Game Demos

Today I downloaded a demo of the PC game "John Woo Presents: Stranglehold".

It was a whopping 1.96 GB!

I guess that, as games and software in general are getting more sophisticated and take up more space, it is only to be expected, but this is getting ridiculous. Especially when you consider that some of us do still do not have unlimited download capacity...

WW II bomb disabled in Belgium

Isn't it "funny" how the Second World War keeps affecting the lives of people even now?

Recently, in the Belgian town of Evergem, a bomb weighing well over 900 kilograms, dropped by the Americans sometime in 1944 to take out a German fuel depot (or so I heard) was found during renovation work at Total Company.

Lots of people from the neighbourhood were evacuated while the bomb was being defused.

One Winged Angel - Live

The Final Fantasy games are known for their high production standards; not only in terms of game play, but also in terms of good stories, interesting characters, inspiring graphics, and great music.

The track "One Winged Angel" by regular FF composer Nobuo Uematsu from the climactic battle against Sephiroth in FF VII is very wellknown and popular among fans, for, I think, obvious reasons.

Because, you see, it's FRIKKIN' AWESOME!!

Here's a live performance of this piece:

Game Retrospectives at Gametrailers.com

The computer and video games website Gametrailers.com has been making an excellent series of retrospectives of wellknown game series, among which the Metroid series of games and the venerable "Final Fantasy" series, among others.

The retrospectives cover the entire history of these games, sometimes literally covering decades of gaming history in the process. The Final Fantasy series in particular has a whopping 10 episodes to watch!

Anime Goodies

I've always loved giant robots, from back in the age of Mazinger and Grendizer to the more "realistic" mecha anime, such as Gundam and Macross.

Check this one: http://www.yamato-toys.com/items/detail.php?gid=114

For those familiar with the series Super Dimension Fortress Macross, this particular vehicle looks vaguely like an F14 Tomcat but is something even cooler, namely: the VF-1A Valkyrie, a vehicle that can transform! Robotech fans will probably know it best as the Veritech Fighter.

It has 3 modes: fighter plane mode, "Battroid" robot mode and an intermediate "Gerwalk" mode where it basically looks like a fighter plane with arms & legs.

This particular model is the Valkyrie model flown by Hikaru Ichijo in the Macross feature-length animated movie Macross: Do You Remember Love?

Check this entry at Macross World for a video guide on transforming the toy, and here for some more pics. Oh, and here is a review.

Blade Runner is back!

Not that it was ever gone or anything, but I needed a catchy title. Blame me!

Expect the Blade Runner "Final Cut" out in December, in several different sets, the highlight being a briefcase - modeled after one Harrison Ford's character Deckard uses in the movie - containing no less than 5 discs, containing the new Cut and all the previous ones including the legendary "Workprint" version.

On top of that, there will be a documentary, several featurettes, and a special appearance by Bingo The Clown and his Exploding Gerbils!

OK, I made up one of the above. Guess which one! Win exciting prizes! (Yeah, RIGHT!)

Anyway, for those familiar with one of the top websites covering all things Blade Runner, I'm happy to announce that BRMOVIE.com has resumed activity and is constanly being updated by a team of corporate vat-grown cyber-enhanced ninjas as you read this!

Check this page in particular if you want to find out more about the new Final Cut edition:

More about Goldorak / Grendizer

I just wanted to mention a great website about all things Grendizer.

http://www.grendizer.net/

It's an Arabic site - as I mentioned in a previous blog Grendizer was big in many regions, including the Middle East - but fear not! It does have English text so reading it shouldn't be a problem. Which is great because this happens to be one of the best sites about Grendizer I know about. There's lots of stuff there, including the complete soundtrack.

Highly recommended!

George Lucas In Love

This one has been out for a while, but I wanted to mention it anyway. Inspired by the romantic comedy "Shakespeare In Love", this is a fictional dramatization of George Lucas' days as a struggling college student, and about the things that would inspire him to later make Star Wars... and this movie about a talking alien duck.

Running at about 8 minutes, this parody is great fun, chock full of inside jokes and references. Check it out!

Oh... And make sure you keep watching while the end credits roll... There's a bonus scene.

Things to dislike in computer and video games

I haven't actually blamed stuff in a while.

How about this one? FPS and/or action games featuring jumping puzzles!

I hate jumping puzzles. You know the sort. You have this action game, maybe a first person shooter, and since somehow fighting for your life and defeating your enemies isn't enough, you suddenly are tested at how good your reflexes are, when you have to make your way across some obstacle or series of obstacles, jump over bottomless pits, or whatever. And if you miss, it's reloading time.

What great fun!

No?

No, I didn't think so either.

This kind of game challenge originated in so-called platform games such as the Mario Bros. games and others such as Sonic The Hedgehog and its sequels and spinoffs. And in my opinion, that is where they should stay. Those games are all about that sort of challenge - reflexes, timing, that sort of thing. I'm not interested in that type of game, so it really is annoying if I have to deal with it in an FPS, or adventure, or whatever.

I think it's poor game design, or a misguided attempt to cater to all tastes.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut

Fans of science fiction and Really Good Movies, rejoice! Ridley Scott's masterpiece "Blade Runner" is about to be unleashed upon us in its "Final cut"!

More on the Live action Goldorak/Grendizer movie

Here's a short "making of" featurette. Unfortunately it's in Italian without any subs, but it's still pretty cool to watch.

Goldorak live-action film trailer

In the 1970s, manga artist Go Nagai had enormous success with a series called "Mazinger Z". This was followed up by 2 other series, "Great Mazinger", and a series called "UFO Robot Grendizer". All of these series featured near-indestructible fighting machines that defended our planet from various evil forces.

Grendizer, while in Japan not as successful as the Mazinger series, was (and amazingly still is!) hugely successful in many countries in Europe and the Middle East. In France and Québec Grendizer became Goldorak. Generations of people, including me, grew up watching this series.

The trailer you see if from a bunch of Italian dudes who also grew up with Grendizer (or Goldrake as he is known in Italy) and I must say it looks pretty darn good!

I don't know what their chances are of ever making a full-length movie, but I hope they will pull it off somehow.

"Goldorak, GO!"

P.S. The Ultimate Showdown of Good vs. Evil! Grendizer vs Megatron! Who will win? I think you know who I'm rooting for.

Japan - Nightporter

I have a pretty varied taste in music - from specific pop songs over film music , electronic and new age to classical music.

This one has been a favorite over the years. Based on Erik Satie's "Gymnopédies" series of music, this song is absolutely drop-dead beautiful.

Angriest dude EVER!

I guess everyone knows who Leonidas was by now. Even the average school kid who generally knows jack about history! Or about what is supposed to be common knowledge . Or geography. Anyway...

So Leo was this cool dude desperately in need of some serious anger management, who lead an elite force of 300 Spartans to stop the invading forces of the Persians.

A little known fact is that Leo did NOT die, but rather lived another 2000 years, and decided to start a chain of chocolate shops in Belgium!

So whenever you visit one of these shops, don't mention the Persians. He still gets worked up over that.

All together now:

Cats vs. Pollution!

Move over, Batman! Here is.... The Cat!

In the 1973 Flemish-Belgian TV series "De Kat" (Dutch for "The Cat") a company called Af-Val (as in "afval", literally "Trash") is responsible for high-level pollution of a river near a small Flemish town called Holebeek.

One guy decides to take up the fight against this company - just talking to them apparently doesn't help - and becomes a sort of eco-terrorist/vigilante, trying to bring them to their senses and do something about the pollution. To keep his real identity secret, he calls himself The Cat, and wears a superhero-like outfit with a stylized cat mask. Think Batman, but without the cape. Or Robin! Uhm, anyway...

This was a pretty popular series on Flemish TV, of of several penned by writer/screenwriter Lode De Groof, and through reruns over the years, generations of people grew up with it.

This series was ahead of its time! Environmentalism, making people aware of the problems and dangers of industrial pollution, and the search for solutions, making life better for everyone.

To its credit, the baddies weren't cardboard 2-dimensional. (Well, not all of them anyway, but I'll get back to that.)

The initial bad guy of the story, the company's boss, a man called Oskar Dias, is initally very much opposed to The Cat and everything he fights for. However, as the series progresses he is forced to re-evaluate his views, and eventually reluctantly makes peace with The Cat and his growing group of merry rebels, after first his niece - and later on his own wife -willingly join them.

Unfortunately the series is dumbed down somewhat by the inclusion of Dias' Bumbling Henchmen(tm). While originally conceived by the series' writer as the company's strong-arm squad, some of these thugs are pure comic relief, and often seem barely able to tie their own shoe laces, let alone catch any intruders. Only on accasion do they shown signs of actual intelligence, and actually manage to accomplish their objectives.

Although the series supposedly took place in this nondescript Flemish rural town, in reality it was filmed on location somewhere in the sunny south of France. So what you see in the series is a Flanders that never existed, lending an almost surreal quality to the series.

Ghost In The Shell - Music Video Anthology

I've been a big fan of the Ghost In The Shell series for many years. So far it has consisted of several manga, 2 animated movies, two TV series and one feature-length special based on the TV series. Other than that, there have been at least 3 games over the years, made for the Playstation, PS2 and the PSP. So anyway...

Recently I got me the "Ghost In The Shell Music Video Anthology".

http://www.beez-ent.com/products.php?sId=298

The set consists of a DVD and an audio CD. The DVD's main feature is a number of music videos using tracks Kenji Kawai's score set to bits of scenes and backgrounds that were used in the movie. Those make up about half an hour worth of material. Then there are 3 other separate clips in the extras section: basically 2 more clips, one of which is the "Follow Me" song (but this time without the singing voice), the bit with the toy basset hound dog you saw in the movie, and an interview with Kawai, which isn't particularly interesting. And that's basically it.

What there is certainly nice, and there are some brief unseen bits, small pieces of footage I don't remember seeing in the movie, or in one case, the yakuza bar/hideout but without any characters. Other than that they are just clips from the movie, sometimes with quotes from various literature appearing on top. A nice touch were the DVD's menus that were modeled after the orange-coloured 3D computer interface graphics and sound FX used in Innocence, and Avalon before it.

Other than that, the set comes with an audio CD that contains the complete Innocence soundtrack. Which is great! Unfortunately I had a copy already, but for those who happen to be looking for the album, well, it's included in this set, and it makes up, I guess, for the fairly short amount of content on the DVD. After all, the music is what the set is all about.

Other than that, the set has liner notes, a small booklet containing the English Lyrics from the songs used in Innocence, and 5 "postcards" showing screenshots from the movie.

Verdict: I have mixed feelings about this set. As the reviewer here states (http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/gits2videos.php) the DVD could, or maybe SHOULD have been a bonus disc to be included with the movie itself. Apart from very short clips of unseen footage there isn't anything new to people who know the movie.

What is there sure is nice enough. The clips and music are taken out of the context of the movie, and as such make good background video stuff to drool over, or run while you're doing something else.

Recommended for GITS fans who didn't have the soundtrack yet, or the completists who just want it all.

Hercules vs. Michael!

In 1995, a new TV show called “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” (HTLJ) caused a sensation in TV world. Loosely based on the rich mythology of Ancient Greece, and, as the series progressed, featuring Norse and African mythologies and religions as well, up to and including the rise of Christianity.

It proved so popular it spawned 2 spin-off series, among which “Xena: The Warrior Princess”, a series that at one point surpassed Hercules in popularity, if memory serves well. The success of these shows also resulted in countless lookalike shows using a similar formula, among which a Conan series and the underrated gem called “Roar”, starring Heath Ledger.

But I digress. Back to Hercules & Xena! An interesting theme that at one point, both shows began featuring a recurring theme, a larger arc if you will, of the death of the old gods, Norse and Greek alike, while newer religions and godlike beings are rising.

Enter “Revelations”, one of my favorite episodes of HTLJ, where none other than the archangel Michael shows up, apparently plotting to destroy humanity, and start the world over anew. In this he enlists the help of his old buddies, the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. Naturally, ol’ Herc is not amused, and with his buddy Iolaus and the reluctant help of his half-brother, Ares, the Greek god of war himself, he decides to take on the archangel and his apocalyptic allies.

This is in - my humble opinion, naturally - one of the better episodes of this series. It has all the usual ingredients: lots of action, the series’ typical humor, the clashing of different mythological beings, cats & dogs living together... The works!

As it turns out, the episode is available in 7 parts on Youtube:

The Skeletor Show

Someone told me about this one; it's called The Skeletor Show. A funny parody series obviously based on the old Masters of The Universe animated series.

Follow the daily life of the Lord of Destruction himself, as he manages his empire of evil!

Here's the link to Episode 1:

One of my favorite moments is the intro to Episode 7. Ever wanted to see Skeletor do opera?

(That's real opera, not the browser...)

There's 10 episodes so far, the latest one numbered 9.5.

Enter The Smurf

In our ongoing series "Europe's contributions to world culture" I present...

Father Abraham & The Smurf Song!

The Smurf Song is basically, well, a song about the Smurfs. No, REALLY! The Smurfs, as you may know, are are creation of the late Belgian comic artist Peyo; Father Abraham dedicated a song to them way back in the 1970's.

You can hear it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3Pl7Oa8BtY

Be afraid. Be VERY afraid!

"Father Abraham" is a Dutch singer, and is fairly well-known in Holland and Flanders. "Vader", BTW, is not only Luke's father, but is actually the Dutch word for "father". So, Vader Abraham!

Here's his site: http://www.vader-abraham.com/

Wubi - user-friendly Linux Ubuntu installer for Windows

I just learned about something called Wubi. Sounds like a new Furby or something similarly sickeningly cute.

What it is, is a Ubuntu Linux installer for Windows. The neat thing is that it doesn't require a separate partition, or even a boot disk.

You download it, you run it, and Wubi will create a virtual drive. Next time you boot you will boot into a menu where you choose between loading Windows or Ubuntu. Should you ever need to uninstall it, it works just like uninstalling a Windows app. You boot into Windows and run the uninstaller; you know the drill.

Check this site for more information: http://wubi-installer.org/

By the way, I learned about this on the latest show of DL.TV, an online tech show; http://dl.tv/

He's a robot! He's a potato! He's an... Uhm, what?!

Now I've seen everything!

A Mr. Potato Head version of Optimus Prime! Face-plate and other parts are removable, and there is a moustache included, which is funny since that kind of makes him look like Peter Cullen! Not sure if he'll be pleased with that, but hey...

I.M.P.S. Relentless

http://www.impstherelentless.com/tek9.asp

Last weekend I learned of a SW fan film project named "I.M.P.S. Relentless". Originally meant as a spoof on shows like "Cops" and other so-called "reality" shows, this is about daily life in the Imperial fleet.

Production values and SFX are surprisingly good, and could compete with the best of what's on TV nowadays.

So far there's been a trailer and 1 episode, both featuring narration by Peter Cullen.

Vangelis & The Web

I'd like to formally blame Vangelis.

You know, Vangelis, the famous Greek composer & synthesizer pioneer, highly regarded by intelligent people with refined taste in music! (Yes, I'm a fan. Why?) Not Vangelis the brick layer, not Vangelis the singing pony, not... Well, you know.

So why do I blame him? Not because of his music which I have always liked a lot.

No, I blame him because of his official website. Did you know he even had one?

Well, he does. Here's the link: http://www.vangelisworld.com/

Go to it and you'll find an announcement for his "upcoming" album Oceanic.

Oceanic was released in 1996... 11 years ago! Yes, folks, the page has looked like that for 11 years. It's never been updated. Never.

Even I am not that lazy! Sammit!

Transformers

Having grown up with Sci-Fi and anime often featuring giant robots, transforming or otherwise, I had been eagerly awaiting this live-action adaptation of the Japanese/American phenomenon known as Transformers.

Well, I've seen it several times by now, and I LOVE it! Seeing screenshots of the movie doesn't do it justice; you have to see these things in motion. There's lots of action, lots of humor - even though not always to my taste, to be honest - and we meet up with some of our favourite childhood characters.

Speaking of which, returning to his role as [the voice of] the iconic Optimus Prime is veteran voice actor Peter Cullen (http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=peter+cullen). I'd go to see this movie just to hear him talk. According to one reviewer, he "sounds like a cross between a badass action hero, the guy who does the movie trailers, and God" (http://allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=1:322407~T1) which I think is a rather good description.

The story revolves around an artifact called the Allspark. This "allspark" has existed in various TF continuities meaning different things or concepts accordingly. In this movie it is a device that... Well, maybe you should find out for yourself.

In the mean time, there's some really nice toys out, such as the one featured here:

In fact, I got him myself! Blame me.

ShadowBlame Part 2 - The Return of The Sequel

OK, Shadowrun's been out for a while now. Guess what? It's been generally received as a disappointment. Well, duh!

According to the reviews I've read, it's basically a Counterstrike variant with a few twists. Other than that there's too little variation in maps. Too shallow, too short.

What a shame. Here's hoping they will do a new RPG adaptation one day.

Miss me?

OK so I didn't post for 9 billion years. Blame me!

But now I'm ba-aaaack...
